Or at the very least are trend setters. I was reading jess and pondered a bit why it was in fact that I thought geeks are cool. It is because everything we do, over time, becomes socially acceptable to the point where if you don’t embrace it you are left behind. Blog, LoTR, MMORPG, MP3 and Bittorrent. All these things exist because of us and what we do. It is now expected that you have a blog, and if you don’t “wer hav u been? undr a rok? they r so c00l!” It took 3 epic movies which absolutely ripped the books apart for LoTR to become famous… but we had read the books how many years ago now? Do you even know what a MMORPG is? It took the release of World of Warcraft for people to realise that playing in persistent online worlds could actually be engaging and fun. The list goes on. Are we cool to the general public? No. Will we be when everyone decides what we have been doing for years is actually a good thing? Probably not. At least we know you’d be nowhere without us.
Geek - a person who is extremely interested and knowledgeable about computers, electronics, technology, and gadgets.
The World is full of geeks now, and people are so stupid they don’t even realise it. Hell SMS messaging could be construed as geeky, having an iPod, mobile phones with the internet. It’s just a shame that all these people haven’t got the same intelligence of most geeks.

I have a web log (still hate the word ‘blog’), dislike LOTR, have no idea what a MMORPG is, and don’t use mp3s or Bittorrent. I don’t play online games, or offline ones for that matter. I also send SMS by writing out full words. Woo.
You’re right though, geeks bring funky technologies out of the woodwork.

Unfortunatley there is is a major misconception of what a geek is. So many people just going I’m a geek because I play games. Bullshit. Geeks know stuff, not these little newbies who like to think they do. double clutching their mouse buttons and granny shifting their space bars.
Bring on the people who can fix any problem under the sun. Bring on the people who know what ls -a does. The world needs to re-define what a geek is, and give all those who aren’t; a new name.

Haha, ls -a. I ‘haxx0r3d’ my profile so that l (lowercase L) did an ls -a. I could never really understand the advantage of doing an l over an ls -a.

you’re so terribly fickle! but i do agree with you, i had my ipod way before it was completely mainstream (makes me feel better to think that too). it’s hard to define geek when geeks can’t even agree on what it is that makes them a geek.
t: A nerd is good at something, so you could have a science nerd, a math nerd, or even a sport nerd. A geek is generally obsessed with something, such as science, math, or computing, typically wears glasses, has asthma, pasty skin, etc, etc.
i don’t agree with his definition of a geek, but nerd is kind of close, although there are nerds who aren’t good at anything, nerd just implies an awful lot of study.

t, that is a problem you have due to internet constraints. as soon as you get something faster than 56k, mark my words, you will know what bittorrent is, and as if you dont use mp3’s. hah. I know very well you can’t physically squeeze a music CD into your ipod shuffle.

Jess, I was generalising don’t forget =).
Jig, I have broadband access at work, at your place, etc etc, and I still don’t use Bittorrent or MP3s… though I do use AAC (ripped CDs to PC).
