Sup?

3/9/2007

First in the “Origins of words and other things!” series.

Many people believe “Sup” this is a shortened version of “wassup” which is a shortened version of “what’s up?” which is a shortened version of “what is happening these days with you on this fine day?” The word “sup” came about way back in the days when the men still ruled the roost and the females were doing all they could to make them happy at home. Of course these days it is a much more even playing field where both teams are evenly balanced, but back in those days the men worked and the women stayed at home, looked after the kids and made food for everyone.

Of course during the depression there wasn’t a lot of food around, things like meat were only for those who were in boxing fights and won like Russell Crowe did that time when he was a boxer (not when he had multiple personality disorder). Anyway everyone else had to eat soup. Vegetable soup and stock soup, that’s all they ever ate and when the man came home from his day at the docks (they all worked at docks back then) he would come in and say “Hello family, I am looking forward to a good meal of soup today”. This was of course after all the hugs and kisses from the family.

As the depression wore on, everyone started getting depressed and a little annoyed at stuff. They started getting rather short and bad tempered (not short in stature). The man of the house would come in and say “Hey woman, give me my soup”. Some months went by and it turned into “Hey you! Soup!” Even more months it was simply “Soup!” Things weren’t getting any better though and the husbands were making less and less at the docks and it got to the point that even as angry and short (not in stature) tempered they were, there was even some doubt as to whether or not they would get the soup and instead of demanding it, it became a question. “Soup?”

Over time the “o” was dropped as the men became lazier due to lack of sustenance and for ease of spelling and then the depression ended. There was no more soup on the table, but big meals with all sorts of delicacies. But the man still came home and asked “Sup?” to which the wife, now no longer cooking soup simply replied with how her day went.
