Geek at the Movies VIII

10/5/2008

From now on I will be providing extremely brief synopsis of the movies.

Choke
From the writer of Fight Club comes this movie about a sex addict who is trying to find out who his father is from his demented mother. This movie was fantastic. I really enjoyed Fight Club, one of my favorite movies of all time and while this isn’t anything like that, you can still see some similarities in the writing style. The story is very very bizzare and also very very funny. Lots of sex scenes (he is a sex addict after all) however none of them are “sexy” and don’t seem out of place or there for the sake of it. Lots of Jesus talk (in a funny way)… I can’t really say anymore about that without ruining some of the jokes. Even my girlfriend enjoyed it and I was sure she would be closing her eyes and blocking her ears by the end. Go see it, it wont be out for long, if it comes to Australia at all. 4.5/5

Eagle Eye
Movie about a dude who is being told what to do by a secret organisation. It’s pretty good, most people slammed this movie for being completely unrealistic, recycled plot and lame action. I disagree for the most part. Sure the action could have been better but there was a lot of it. Sure the story was recycled and the twist could be seen from a mile away, especially if you happened upon the trailer. Sure some things simply aren’t possible even in the realms of extreme “what if”. But I still found it compelling and entertaining enough to not get bored and that’s what watching a movie is all about right? 3/5

My Best Friends Girl
Movie about a dude who asks his best friend to go on a date with his ex so she will see how she is missing out by dumping him. I found it very funny, while a lot of the jokes fell a little flat or perhaps will be a little too harsh, I happen to enjoy a lot of that humour. The story itself didn’t excite me too much though, it did seem like just a housing for the jokes and the ability to put the cars song “my best friends girl” in the movie. 3/5

Ghost Town
Movie about a dude who dies for a bit and when he comes back alive he sees dead people who want his help. The story is old and one that’s been told a million times before but it has a special sort of feel about it mostly brought on by Ricky Gervais. He has a fantastic sense about dry humour and it’s loaded with it. He doesn’t seem like the bastard he is trying to portray even though his responses usually sound like it. Just a person who wants to be left alone, hard when he has a crapload of dead people asking him for help. Hence the dilemma. Any fan of him should see the movie, it doesn’t have his awkward jokes he is known of from the office but it is still his brand of funny. 3/5

Rent
A musical about some people in America who can’t pay the rent. I’m not usually a “musical” person. When I heard what it was about, it immediately dropped off my radar and I didn’t even think about seeing it until it had already started. Being a projectionist however means I have to go to all the movies and check things like sound quality and video quality and make sure everything is running like it should. I saw a few snippets of Rent and it didn’t look too horrible so I made the plunge and saw it. It was great. Funny, smart and a little strange sometimes. The lyrics were for the most part great and some of the songs are really catchy to the point where I now have the soundtrack on my computer. There is something for everyone, jokes, cultural references, lesbians, gay dudes, and lets not forget the singing and dancing! Against all odds it was entertaining which is a good thing for a musical. 4/5

  3. Told you the end was bad, so disappointing. Yeah I think I have been more now than ever. Thing is even though I get to go to the movies for free now, I still don’t have time to see everything. They release way too many movies too often.
